The Euros So Far...

Now unless you've been living under a rock for the past 2 weeks you may have noticed a certain football competition taking place across the English Channel. Even the very least of football fans would not have been able to hide from the tv adverts and the chitter chatter on the morning's daily commute. Yes everyone, Euro 2016 in France is here and it's alive and kicking! 2 weeks of excitement and drama on and off the pitch has already come and gone, and with the quarter-finals just around the corner, I thought I'd do a quick round-up of the talking points and best moments so far (you know, just in case you were one of those people snoozing under that rock).

1. Violent scenes between English and Russian fans in the run-up to their opening round
fixture  led to Russia being warned of possible suspension from the tournament by
    organisers UEFA.

2. There have been 9 penalties awarded in the competition so far; only 5 have been
    scored.

3. Tournament hosts France are unbeaten in the competition so far, having won 3 of their
    last 4 matches.

4. 3 players are in the running for the Adidas Golden Boot award, given to the player
who has scored the highest number of goals in the tournament. Wales' Gareth Bale is         currently leading the pack with 3 goals, with Spanish attacker Alvaro Morata and
French player Antoine Griezmann rounding out the top 3 positions, having also scored
3 goals. Assists are used to separate players on the same number of strikes, before
minutes played are taken into consideration.

5. Iceland is the smallest nation at this year's Euros, with a population of just over
320,000 people. The tournament debutant's next opponents England have a population
165x its size, at 53 million in comparison.

With just 2 weeks left of the tournament to go, I'm eagerly looking forward to more excitement, drama, extra-times, penalties, sending offs and everything else the competition has to offer. Keep an eye out for more updates on this blog throughout the month!
